Salvaged is played entirely through an in-game computer, with a fictional OS and GUI.
Salvaged had a long development cycle, starting early on in the new wave of VR games, being shown many times at conferences to people who often had had few experiences with VR. With this in mind, I designed the UI to be as intuitive as possible, while keeping it in keeping with the fiction of the Salvaged universe.
I wanted navigating through screens to be effortless, seamlessly transitioning from main game menus, to "logging in" as the protagonist, to commanding troops on the battlefield.
In many sci-fi games, colour palettes using blues and greens have been used for the UI. Wanting to make the UI really distinctive, I chose a primarily orange scheme with blue highlights.
